There’s no minimum word count, I’d say at least 5000 words is good for a short story.

Great article- I’ve been researching indie publishing options for over a year because I like to be prepared. I initially learned about Draft2Digital from Joanna Penn’s podcast and was interested. Then I read somehing about a 10% royalty and I was concerned that this was the amount the author would earn. Your article provided a welcome clarification.
My only other question is whether there is a word count minimum or maximum. I have been working on a collection of short stories based on my home state. The time has expanded as my characters have grown so I want to get out a shorter version with two that are touching, character-driven romantic journeys. They are each compelling stories each of novelette or novella length in one volume Thanks!

As long as I don’t opt for the KDP Select, I still can publish it in KDP platform, right? Because, I require the paperback availability too, not just ebook alone. D2D doesn’t provide the paperback option, i guess. Thank you so much for your reply and good wishes.

Hi Britton, yes, it’s your book, you can definitely publish it on D2D and KDP for paperback at the same time.
The only catch is, if you choose to publish ebook to different sales channels (Kobo, B&N etc) via D2D, you can’t publish it on Amazon KDP Select.

You can list your book on Amazon KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) without joining Amazon KDP select and distribute your books to other eBook retailers using D2D.

If I am distributing wide thru D2D can I opt out of Amazon on D2D and then also publish my book with KDP in order to have it pre-listed on the amazon website? Also – people seem to us “KDP” and “KDP Select” interchangeably but can you publish thru KDP without being KDP Select? In other words, can I publish my book thru KDP for Amazon listing and then in addition use D2D to distribute to all other platforms/stores?
