It is perhaps the most popular market analysis tool for cryptocurrencies.
Founded in 2013, CoinMarketCap has gained a reputation in the crypto sphere as the key reference point for price tracking. It’s widely used by crypto enthusiasts, traders, speculators, and even major news media like Bloomberg.
So there comes the question, “Why would you need to use other alternative sites if you can get all the prices and information all in one platform?”
But the overdependence on a centralized system for checking cryptocurrency price isn’t without its flaws.
Just occurred in early 2018 when CoinMarketCap decided to change its price calculation model and removed South Korean exchanges from its listings, causing the overall market plummeted.
But the truth is almost all coins were traded on South Korean exchanges at a premium. CoinMarketCap’s decision to exclude Korean exchanges, giving a false impression that coins were crashing and causing panic selling in the crypto market.
This incidence affected altcoin Ripple (XRP) the most, lost over $20 billion in market capitalization overnight.
What we can learn from here is that overdependence on a centralized system for price tracking will cause widespread chaos and unnecessary confusion across the market. It’s never a good idea to have a centralized platform dominating in a robust decentralized ecosystem.
Having said that, I’ve compiled a list of best 8 CoinMarketCap alternatives to track the cryptocurrency prices.
My favorite 8 CoinMarketCap Alternatives
1. CoinGecko
Launched in April 2014, CoinGecko is a one of the world’s largest analytics site for tracking cryptocurrencies, ICOs and blockchain assets.
At first glance, CoinGecko looked quite similar to CoinMarketCap. Both have a clean and simple user interface, providing live cryptocurrency price, market capitalization, graph and ranking.
What makes CoinGecko different from CoinMarketCap is that it takes other important factors into consideration for the coins rankings such as liquidity, developer activity, community and public interest.
As a general rule of thumb, a healthy altcoin should have a good community support, exhibit high liquidity, and have an active input from developers.
If you’re looking to invest or trade altcoins, you should at least check out CoinGecko.
Besides that, you can also use the many widgets provided and APIs on the platform for free.
For those who’re into the space of crypto mining, you might want to look into the mining calculator section. With the help of this calculator, you’ll learn whether it’s profitable for you to mine the particular coin and how long it’ll take to make any profit or get even.
